When I moved to Muskoka in October 2016 I was so thrilled with the tranquility and natural surroundings that I hunkered down and spent several months just getting used to my new life. When Christmas and New Years had come and gone I was ready to come out and play again, but I hadn’t made any friends in Muskoka yet! I missed the buzz of the Collingwood arts community that had played such a large part in my professional and social life.
When I was driving into Huntsville one blustery January day, I saw a tiny building with a couple of huge, colourful signs that said Hunters Bay Radio 88.7. I recognized the name and the call numbers because I had tuned into some great music in the car and it had become my go-to local radio station. On a whim, I walked in and asked to speak to the station manager. Jeff Carter, founder and owner (who introduces himself simply as Station Manager) very kindly made time for me. I don’t know what he thought, seeing me in my big furry boots, walking in unannounced, but I pitched the show I had started to do on Rogers TV in Collingwood, just before we got the news we were moving (sorry Collingwood!). Jeff was open to hearing more...and just like that, Storylines was born.
The first show aired February 7, with my guest Peter Jennings, Muskoka author and broadcaster. Peter was patient, kind and brilliant! And I was hooked on radio.
Here are a few highlights of Storylines since it launched in February 2016:
